Over-The-Rhine Mural

“Canal at Vine Street circa 1900”
A project of the 2007 ArtWorks Summer Program
  • Barlow Motors Building, Media Bridges – 1100 Race St.  Cincinnati, OH 45202
  • Mural dedicated August 2007

Over the Rhine Mural

The OTR mural is painted on the most prominent wall of the historic Barlow Motors building. It is appropriate that the building is historic, for the mural painted there is historic as well. The mural is a reproduction in paint of a century-old photograph that was taken about a block down from the present mural site.

The Apprentices, teaching artist and project manager also had to work on a scissor lift due to the fact the mural begins completely off of the ground. “It’s kind of nerve-wracking [to paint on the scissor lift],” Apprentice Quentin Koopman said. “The whole lift sways back and forth, you just kind of work with it.” Despite this difficulty, the mural turned out beautifully, an extraordinary and everyday reminder of Cincinnati’s history.
