In 2006, ArtWorks introduced Cincinnati to TOM, an outdoor exhibition of billboard-sized works of graphic art created by teenagers employed in the ArtWorks Summer Program.  Their theme was “harmony” and the teens apprenticed to local professional graphic designers to create graphic works of art that visually expressed this theme.  The exhibit was recognized by Cincinnati Magazine for a Best Outdoor Art Award in the 2006 “Best of Cincinnati” issue.

In 2008, the teens and designers took on the theme “green.”  They were challenged to learn not only about graphic design but to explore the theme’s multi-faceted meanings in a world where everyone (and everything) is going green.

Green is everywhere.  It is a color, but it has also become a movement and a cause.  It is a way a person chooses to live their life in a sometimes-wasteful world.  We all know the word “green,” but how do you say it with meaning, with resonance and power?  How do you say it so it is more than a buzzword or a slogan?  Visit TOM to see how 12 teens and 12 local graphic design firms interpreted “green” and what it means here and now in Cincinnati.

2006 - The Outdoor Museum: [ Harmony ]
A project of the 2006 ArtWorks Summer Program
In partnership with Cincinnati Park Board

  • Exhibited: September - December 2006 in 3 locations, Theodore M. Berry International Friendship Park, Burnet Woods, and Eden Park.

ArtWorks Apprentices had the opportunity to work with 13 leading design firms in the Cincinnati area to create graphic design images. Apprentices and designers alike were challenged to draw on their own creativity and imagination to create designs that evoke harmony. From the pool of designs, a jury chose the 30 best images. These images were displayed on large billboards in an outdoor museum that traveled throughout Cincinnati Parks Theodore M. Berry International Friendship Park, Burnet Woods, and Eden Park.
