Art Racks Artist F.A.Q.

How do I become an Art Rack artist?
To be considered as an Art Rack artist please submit a resume, 5 portfolio samples, an artist statement and 3 references. You can email, mail or deliver your materials to ArtWorks. For complete information download the RFQ sheet.

What if I already have a design idea for an Art Rack?
For this public art project the artist selection will be based on qualifications, not proposals. It is not necessary to submit a design idea to be considered. If you have an idea we will gladly accept your proposal. Please submit an image of your design idea and a letter detailing the materials, dimensions and any other specifics helpful in describing your design.

How are Art Rack artists selected?
Artists who submit a resume, art samples, references and an artists’ statement will be considered and added to a database of Art Rack artists. As we secure each sponsorship and location for an Art Rack an artist will be selected to design a rack for a specific locations.

If I’m selected what happens?
If you are selected to participate you will receive a letter notifying you with information including the location, size and timeline for your Art Rack. At that time you will be invited to develop a rack design for a specific location.

Are their design regulations for the racks?
As with most public art projects there are general and specific guidelines to follow to ensure that the racks are functional, safe and durable. This information will be provided to you upon being selected to design a rack.

If selected, how long will I have to design and create the rack?
Timelines will vary but generally, after selection, artists will be given 3-6 months to design and create their rack. This includes 4-6 weeks to develop conceptual designs, 4-6 weeks to finalize an approved design and 3-6 months to fabricate the design.
The conceptual designs will be reviewed and approved by ArtWorks, the City and sponsor. Suggestions may be made to ensure the final rack conforms to all requirements. A final design review will ensure that all revisions have been made and fabrication can begin.

How are Art Racks Fabricated?
Art Racks can be fabricated by the artist if they have the ability to create the design. If not, then artists may work with a fabricator of their choice.

What are the responsibilities of an Art Rack Artist?
Artists are responsible for the design, fabrication, finishing and transportation of the completed rack to the installation site. ArtWorks will handle the costs of installation and creation of a plaque identifying the Art Rack.

How much do I get paid if selected?
Artists receive a stipend of $3,500 to cover the artist fee, design, fabrication, finishing and transportation of the completed rack to the installation site.

What if I am not a sculptor?
No problem. We know that some artists who aren’t sculptors will have great ideas. These artists will be responsible for the costs of fabrication.

What are some of the benefits to being an Art Rack Artist?
All Art Rack artists will receive a $3,500 stipend for design, fabrication, finishing and transportation of the completed rack to the installation site. The stipend will be paid in two parts. Additionally, artists will be included on all press releases and print, web and other collateral related to their rack. A plaque adjacent to the rack will name the artist. Most importantly your work will be in the city for all to see and use.
