There Were Three Featuring work by Molly Donnermeyer, Matthew Morris and Eric Ruschman May 30 - June 13, 2008 Opening Reception: Friday, May 30, 2008, 6 - 9p.m. The ArtWorks Gallery presents There Were Three, a group exhibition of work by local Cincinnati Artists Molly Donnermeyer, Matthew Morris and Eric Ruschman. The three Art Academy graduates are coming together to mesh what is proving to be an evocative feast for the eyes. Using materials such as soap, fabric, thread, graphite, paper, found objects and glitter, each artist has articulated a personal lexicon of imagery in order to specifically address the poetics of space. Within the ArtWorks Gallery, these drawings, sculptures, found objects and installations express mysterious narratives while combining each of the three’s personal mythologies. All in all, this exhibit invites the viewer to experience the ménage a trois of visually eloquent experiments. According to Donnermeyer, her imagery “walks a fine meandering path between fairytales, cult iconography, interior stories, and daily routines” while Morris refers to his post-minimal drawings and sculptures as “suffering fragility, risking uselessness, and re-evaluating frivolity as grounds to mediate intimacy”. Ruschman’s new work includes paintings/installations that “are animated and characterized by idiosyncratic shaped panels that redefine the traditional rectangle. These paintings have been created to take advantage of the gallery (specifically the ArtWorks Gallery space) as their environment.”
